Motorcycle Tour in India for Foreigners (visa/permits)
By
India is one of the great motorcycle countries on Earth. It’s also one of the easiest to get wrong.
This is the guide for riders flying in from the US, UK, EU, Australia, or anywhere else.
TL;DR
- You need a tourist visa (e-Visa works for most nationalities) and an International Driving Permit. Both. Non-negotiable.
- Renting locally is cheaper, easier, and almost always the right call vs shipping your own bike.
- Best regions for first-time foreign riders: Rajasthan (winter), Spiti (summer), South India (year-round).
- Most “international rider tour” packages are repackaged domestic tours. Ask specifically about acclimatization, support, and English-fluent guides.
Step 1: Visas
India e-Visa, ~170 nationalities, 30-day to 5-year options, $25–80, online, 3–5 day processing. Apply 4 weeks before travel. Restricted to specific airports.
Step 2: International Driving Permit (IDP)
Required by Indian authorities. Get it before you fly — India does not issue them to non-residents. Cost $20–50, processing 1–14 days. Bring both IDP AND home licence.
Step 3: Renting vs bringing your own bike
Rent locally if your trip is under 30 days — vastly easier and cheaper.
- RE Himalayan 450: ₹2,500–3,500/day in Leh
- RE Classic 350: ₹1,500–2,200/day
Ship your own only if 2+ months stay or specific medical/preference need. Shipping costs $1,500–3,000+ plus 1–3 weeks customs paperwork.
Step 4: Where to ride
| Region | Best months | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rajasthan | Nov–Feb | Cool, dry, royal forts, easy navigation |
| Spiti Valley | June + Sept | Tibetan culture, lower altitude than Ladakh |
| Ladakh | Jun–Sep | The icon. Higher altitude, longer commitment |
| South India | Nov–Feb | Tea estates, less culture shock |
| Northeast India | Oct–Apr | Hidden gem |
For first-time foreign riders we typically recommend Rajasthan or Spiti.
Step 5: Health and altitude
Talk to doctor about Diamox for Ladakh/Spiti. Carry prescription. Travel insurance with helicopter evacuation cover is non-negotiable.
Step 6: What budget tours get wrong for foreign riders
- Pace assumes you’ve grown up with this altitude/traffic. You haven’t.
- Food: dhaba meals can cause stomach issues for foreign riders.
- “English-speaking guide” can mean 20 words.
- Support ratio designed for Hindi-speaking domestic riders.
What we do specifically for foreign riders
- Visa support letter, IDP guidance
- 2-day Leh acclimatization buffer
- English-fluent tour leaders every tour
- Daily SpO2 checks
- Family-friendly variants
